Botox
OVERVIEW
Botox treatment is used to create overall facial
rejuvenation. The Botox injections temporarily reduce the
appearance of lines, wrinkles, creases, crow’s feet,
and the thick lines that can form on and around the
neck area. The toxin injections paralyze nerve
impulses thus causing the muscles that cause
wrinkles to flatten and become relaxed. The Botox injections give
the face an overall smoother appearance and
patients look more refreshed. Some studies have also
found evidence that Botox can help relieve migraine
headaches, excessive sweating and muscle
contractions in the neck and eye areas. |
SURGERY
The Botox injections and procedures are almost
always outpatient. Dr. Anagnos injects the Botox into the specific
muscles where patients would like to reduce lines,
creases and wrinkles. The procedure only takes a few
minutes and no anesthesia is needed. Generally
patients will only feel a mild discomfort during the
injections. The effects of the procedure generally
last from 4 to 6 months, and some patients
report that their lines and wrinkles are less
visible as the muscles that cause the wrinkles have
been “trained” to relax. However, in most cases, the
lines and wrinkles will reappear.RECOVERY
Patients generally feel fine immediately after the
procedures. Surgeons
instruct patients not to lie down a few hours
following the procedure. Also patients are advised
not to massage or rub the treated area for at least
twelve hours. The most common side effect of the
procedure is temporary bruising which usually
disappears within 24-48 hours. Another side effect
that can happen during the recovery period is eyelid
drooping, however it is usually gone within three
weeks. The cause of the eyelid drooping is the Botox
migrating from the treated area to another area,
which is why patients are advised to not rub or
massage the treated area following the procedure. |
RISKS
The Botox
procedure is a non-surgical procedure therefore it
usually has less complications than other facial
rejuvenation
procedures. With any procedure there can be
some risks. There is an inaccurate
belief that getting Botox treatment will put the patient at
risk for getting botulism from Botox. Botulism is
caused by very large amounts of the Botulinum Toxin
and usually gets into the system from eating
botulinum contaminated food. Very high doses would
have to be used in order for the patient to become
endangered or at risk for getting Botulism.
Incorrect placement of the Botox injection can cause the
muscles in inappropriate areas to relax. An
incorrect placement around the eye could cause a
droopy eye. Only Dr. Anagnos gives injections of
Botox, as the site choice and technique are critical
for a natural, beautiful look. Any side effects
from incorrect placement of the injection will
disappear in 6 months, because Botox treatment is
temporary.
